Last time, by the power of the Spirit, we made havoc enough for you of the subtly calculated dodges, the objections and counter-arguments from the side of sacred Scripture, which these textual vandals use to rob the written words of their sense, get the people on their side, and throw the way of truth into disorder. We have now established a general, and I believe, clear solution, satisfactory to people of sound sense—the solution, I mean, of allocating the more elevated, the more distinctly divine expressions of Scripture to the Godhead, the humbler and more human to the New Adam,1 God passible for our sake over against sin. The pressure of the argument did not allow us to treat of the passages individually. You want brief explanations here to avoid being swept away by their plausible arguments, and we shall group these explanations in numbered sections to aid the memory.
